Makeup Artist and Hairstylist, Deborah Humphries Shares Covid Story

Makeup Artist and Hairstylist Deborah Humphries says at the time the pandemic hit she was working on the Motion Picture Television Fund, however lately she spends her days doing check-in’s on members and helping others in any way she can.

“During this time, I have been calling the members and retirees of Local 706 and sharing important information about IATSE CARES as well as information on the Motion Picture and Television Fund for Los Angeles, California,” says Humphries. “My Local has also been doing our part in dropping off food, volunteering with food drives and getting food to the homes of members who are homebound.”

The Local 706 and 33-year union member is on the executive board of her Local and the welfare committee that helps call seniors and honorable withdrawal members in the union.

“The IATSE C.A.R.E.S program is a huge help, because some seniors don’t have access to the internet or email. A young woman named Shayna Gentiluomo helped me find someone who needed a personal shopper,” says Humphries. “She was so helpful, and everything was done between the senior member who needed help and me. It was amazing!”

Humphries says the virus has shown her the deep bond amongst her brothers and sisters in the union.

“You know it really takes a village. Our Local 706 President, Julie Socash and Welfare Committee Chairman, Carme Tenuta both have been working so hard to make sure families have everything they need and that members have the proper resources to check-in on one another,” she added.

Humphries also shared that her fellow Local 706 brother, Allan Apone and his son AJ have been making and donating masks and filters for first responders and medical personnel.

She also added that fellow Local 706 member Maria Sandoval has been making masks for the City of Hope Kids’ Cancer Ward.

“Everyone cares about each other very deeply,” says Humphries. “We’re all sharing information, food, mental health and financial relief resources. I’m so lucky to be a part of the union, we’re all coming together to make sure everyone is okay during this time.
