IATSE Officer Institute Returns as Union Nears 1,000 Local Union Officers Trained Since 2014

NEW YORK, NY – With in-person IATSE Officer Institute sessions on pandemic hiatus for the past year and a half, the Education Department was thrilled to return in-person for its 21st IATSE Officer Institute 1.0 on December 6-10, 2021.

The Officer Institute 1.0 is a five-day, intensive certification program available to IATSE Local Union leaders who aim to strengthen their knowledge in leadership principles, bargaining, and building power for members.

The comprehensive boot camp offers attendees hands-on experience, effective organizing strategy, and several sessions led by leading experts in their fields. The courses cover a wide range of topics including Basics of Labor Laws, Contract Negotiations, Strategic Thinking, Internal/External Organizing, IATSE Resources and more.

Counting the 2021 session, nearly 1000 Local Union Officers have now graduated from the Officer Institute 1.0, since it launched in 2014.

This is what Education Outreach Coordinator and first-time attendee, Gianni Jimenez had to say about the program:

“Officer Institute 1.0 was by far, one of the most informative yet strenuous weeks I have had so far during my time here in the IATSE Education Department. The weeklong training was one of the most challenging ones I have ever been through, and I say that in the best way possible.

Listening to the numerous presentations about labor laws, collective bargaining, contract negotiations, and even what resources the IA has to offer was a boatload of information for me to process, learn, and understand. I tip my hat to all the knowledgeable presenters we had, who were able to share their expertise, and break down each topic into understandable parts.

Most even added some fun exercises for us to participate in. Officer Institute is a great experience for all leaders in any position. It really gives everyone the same great basis of information to carry with them and to share with all other officers in their unions. I feel that all leaders, if given the opportunity, should most definitely attend the Officer Institute Training because I can assure you, there will always be something new for you to learn.”
