AFL-CIO Applauds Proposed Legislation Targeting Rogue Websites

IATSE General Board Endorses Obama 2nd Term

WASHINGTON, May 12 – Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick J. Leahy led the introduction today of the Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property Act (“PROTECT IP Act”). The bill expands and refines the Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act of the last Congress, which the Committee passed unanimously.

AFL-CIO President Richard L. Trumka said, “The AFL-CIO applauds the introduction of the PROTECT IP Act. The economic well-being of workers in the United States – jobs, income, and benefits – turns more and more on our protecting the creativity and innovation that yield world-class entertainment, cutting-edge and sustainable manufacturing and construction, and disease-ending pharmaceuticals. In a tough economic time, the PROTECT IP Act will help to protect U.S. workers and consumers against digital thieves and counterfeit scammers.”

Paul E. Almeida, President of the Department for Professional Employees, AFL-CIO, said, “Senator Leahy has commented on the bipartisan, bicameral, and labor-management support for strengthening our defense of American intellectual property. That across-the-board support is a tribute to his leadership – and a signal that for U.S. workers and consumers, this is the right thing to do.”

AFL-CIO Legislative Department thanks Senator Leahy.
