California voters made a clear expression of their support for unions yesterday when they defeated proposition 32, a ballot measure designed to severely curtail the influence of organized labor and the voice of workers.

There is no politician more powerful than the President of the United States, and it is incredible that he stood up for us when we needed him most. President Obama stayed around to thank us when he had many other things he could do with his time, on the night before Election Day. As union members we sometimes feel abandoned by the leaders we elect to serve us. However the past few days have shown that some of those leaders care about us, and came through when it mattered most. Our own elected union officials did a superb job and local politicians have promised to follow up this event with further investigation in to the status of IATSE local 12 in Nationwide Arena.

Philadelphia, PA -- There were two full houses during the IATSE Young Workers Conferences in Philadelphia this fall. The Conferences were aimed at teaching practical leadership skills and empowering members 35 and under in their local and their jobsite or workplace. Instructors taught educational seminars to 109 attendees at the September 2012 Conference, and 71 attendees in October 2012, from 71 IATSE locals between the U.S., Canada, and two attendees from our sister union BECTU in the United Kingdom.

The IATSE and the producers of “Fashion Star,” a reality series broadcast on NBC, have reached an agreement, which covers the 130-plus member crew of the series, now shooting its second season. The contract recognizes the value of the skills the IA crew brings to the job and the employers’ willingness to address the issues important to the crew, who will receive health and pension benefits and standardized working conditions.

Halifax, NS - October 2, 2012 – Motion picture technicians in Nova Scotia have had their rights to unionize upheld by a Nova Scotia Labour Board (NSLB) decision issued last week. The NSRB decision to certify a union bargaining unit at Egg Films, the region’s largest producer of television commercials, comes 15 months after IATSE members cast their ballots in a certification vote.

The agreement covers 8,000 IATSE members working in feature film and television production in most areas of the United States outside of the Los Angeles and New York regions.

In an award that remedies twelve years of blatant and continuous violations of federal labor law, the National Labor Relations Board has ordered the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts in West Palm Beach, Florida, to pay $2.6 million in back pay and benefit contributions to IATSE stagehands. These workers had been unlawfully fired and unable to work at the Kravis Center for more than a decade. This decision also includes interest that continues to accrue and remedies violations of federal labor laws committed by the Kravis Center during the period September 2000 through September 2007.

On March 4, 2011, Local 295 filed an application for certification with the Saskatchewan Labour Relations Board for all production employees of the Globe Theatre. The 406-seat theatre was founded in 1966 and is the province's largest professional theatre company. The employer fought the certification and dates were set for both parties to appear before the Labour Board.

The 14 Hollywood-based locals representing over 38,000 members of the IATSE working in motion picture and television production have ratified the new Hollywood Basic Agreement with the AMPTP. The three-year contract, which will go into effect August 1, 2012, is the result of negotiations that began March 7 and concluded April 12.

Canada has long lagged behind most industrial countries with regard to WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) standards with copyright legislation that hadn't been updated since 1997.

On Thursday, June 29, the IATSE alerted the studio facility where the non-union dating show “Ready for Love” had rented a sound stage, that a picket line would be forming outside the studio gate early the next morning before crew members were to report to work. Within a few hours, the IA and Ticking Time Productions, Inc., were in negotiations to avoid a shutdown. By Thursday evening, the crew of around 100 had health and pension benefits retroactive to date of hire, as well as full wages, working conditions, and benefits of the Videotape One-Hour Non-Dramatic agreement. This contract covers both the sizable stage and reality components, about 100 crew members total.

IATSE Local 262 comes out on top again with a second certification in as many weeks for front-of-house employees. This certification concerns employees at the 11-screen Cineplex St-Bruno. The theatre, located on the South Shore of Montreal, is roughly 20 minutes from the city.

Certains d’entre eux travaillaient au Festival de Stratford depuis plus de vingt ans. Le Festival, qui a quatre salles différentes, inaugurait sa 60e saison le 28 mai dernier. La section locale 357 représente des machinistes, des menuisiers scéniques, des chauffeurs, des créateurs de coiffures, des maquilleurs ainsi que des ouvriers aux installations du Festival, et ce, depuis des décennies.

STRATFORD, ON, June 6 – On July 15, 2011, Local 357 certified the 53 members of the audience development department at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival of Canada, who work in the call centre and box office. Some had been Stratford employees for more than twenty years. The Festival, which includes four different theatres, opened its 60th season on May 28. While its primary mandate is to showcase the works of William Shakespeare, the Stratford Shakespeare Festival also showcases a wide variety of theatre, from Greek tragedy to contemporary works. Local 357 has been representing stagehands, scenic carpenters, drivers, hair stylists & makeup artists as well as facilities workers at the Festival for decades.
