NEW YORK, NY – The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employes has finalized a three-and-a-half year contract with New York Times Television covering motion picture and sound editing for cable television productions. The 100-plus member staff organized with the Motion Pictures Editor Guild, IA TSE Local 700 in December of 2001.
NYT-TV, a subsidiary of The New York Times, produces the “Science Times” cable television program for the National Geographic Channel, as well as a number of programs for The Learning Channel, including “Trauma: Life in the ER” and “Maternity Ward.”
The agreement is part of a major effort by the union to organize cable television producers. “This contact is about making sure everyone gets a fair shake and we applaud NYT- TV for helping us to set the standard for reality-based cable television,” said IATSE International President Tom Short.
The Motion Picture Editors Guild is a nationwide union with over sixty years experience representing artists and professionals in film, television and commercial post-production, including picture and sound editors, re-recording mixers, and their respective assistants. With 6,000 members, MPEG is one of the largest in the 110,000 member IATSE union.
