Your Future

The IATSE administers both a national health plan and a national retirement plan for the roughly 16,000 members we have in Canada. There are a few locals that administer their own plans, but the majority of Canadian locals participate in the two national plans. In the case of both plans, contributions are negotiated between the union and the employer and spelled out in each agreement. Any contributions are above and beyond what an employee receives in wages.

These national plans illustrate the basic tenet of trade unionism - that together, we are stronger - by uniting the Canadian locals of the IATSE under one banner so that, through sheer numbers, we are able to negotiate better rates, lower fees, and more benefits for our members.

The Canadian Entertainment Industry Retirement Plan (CEIRP) is a crucial part of the future for all IATSE members, as the federal government continues to explore the possibility of reducing the Canada Pension Plan (CPP). Maintaining their current quality of life is likely to be increasingly challenging for the next generation of retirees. The IATSE believes people who’ve spent a lifetime working deserve a dignified and secure retirement. CEIRP was established in January of 2005 and was so successful that in 2008, we were joined by the Directors' Guild of Canada. CEIRP allows each member to choose the type of investment and level of risk that he or she is most comfortable with and even offers a plan that is geared to age with you and change your risk aversion accordingly. We now serve thousands of entertainment industry workers across the country and have approximately $150 million in plan assets.
