2019 Elections Yield Victories for IATSE Working Families

Thursday, November 7, 2019

Statewide elections took place on Tuesday in several states and the working people of Virginia and Kentucky secured victories that will change the course of worker’s rights in those Commonwealths. Democrats flipped both chambers of the Virginia General Assembly, giving them a trifecta in the state for the first time in over 25 years.

Kentucky Democratic state Attorney General Andy Beshear claimed victory over GOP Gov. Matt Bevin Tuesday night, as he maintains a lead with all precincts reporting. In his victory speech, Governor-Elect Beshear specifically thanked the union families across Kentucky that made it happen.

The elections in Kentucky and Virginia are a victory for IATSE and proof of what's possible when union families fight back. We look forward to working with these newly elected policymakers to ensure that our rights both in and outside of the workplace are protected and respected.

Numerous city and local elections were also held across the country. In particular, congratulations to IATSE Brother and stagehand Braxton Winston on his landslide re-election to the Charlotte City Council! Government works best when working people are in positions of power.

Next up is Louisiana, where IATSE-supported Governor John Bel Edwards is seeking re-election. The general election will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2019.
